When Regan, a yellow Labrador, drug home the plastic Meow Mix bag from one of his rounds through the neighborhood, his owner was not too interested. But, Reagan was having none of his owners ignoring his pleading and whining.
The bag, apparently had been dumped into busy Iowa traffic by a passing car and left there to be run over by another car that was following near the culprit. Most people would assume we just have another litter bug in our midst, but Reagan new better. He risked his own safety to reach the cat food bag and carry it to the side of the busy road.
Somewhere in his doggy brain, Reagan knew that the contents of the bag were depending on him to get the bag somewhere where a human could discover and help what was inside.
This is where Reagan’s owner picks up the story. After constant whining by Reagan, the lab’s owner picked up, what she thought was an empty bag, and decided before she tossed it in the garbage herself, she would open it. What she saw astounded and upset her.
Inside the bag, 4 small eyes were peering out at her and a lot of blood.
A litter of kittens had been sealed in the bag and left in the busy road to be run over. Someone succeeded in doing just that, but not all of the kittens died. Reagan’s owner discovered two kittens clinging to live and the rest possibly another two or three kittens dead.
Reagan’s guardian decided to try to care for the kittens through the night, and the next morning began placing calls to various rescue organizations in the area. She says she placed at least five calls before she finally found one that was willing to take in the traumatized kittens.
The Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary is now housing the two kittens — Skipper and Tipper — who were not originally expected to live through the ordeal. The two were bottled-fed every two hours and are now back to their normal lively selves according to a spokesman at the sanctuary. The kittens are now up for adoption.
Reagan deserves a medal of honor for what he did.
