Keeping a pet is a wonderful experience, and one that can give you years of pleasure and companionship. The problem that faces many would-be dog owners is the issue of space. Apartment living is convenient for us, but if you are desperate for a pet, there are a few things that you need to take into consideration before you invest in a dog to join you in the urban jungle. Here are a few things that you have to remember before taking that pup into your home.

Different breeds have different needs

It is recommended that you do a substantial amount of research on various breeds that may be suitable for indoor living. Every dog is different, and if you don’t keep them happy, you are likely to end up with a situation where your dog is unhappy and lashes out. You might be crazy about labs, but they need space to run and explore, and even if you exercise them every day, they can get cranky. And don’t automatically assume that a small dog will be suited to your smaller space. Pekinese and Maltese can be very loud when they get unhappy, and even dogs that are smaller in build might need more space than you would think – picture an irritated Jack Russell ripping up your favourite sofa. Some apartment buildings have incredibly strict policies on keeping dogs, and you need to respect these rules. Approach your landlord and read through your lease after you have chosen a breed, just to make sure that you aren’t crossing any boundaries. An angry neighbour can make your life miserable, so rather keep to the rules and avoid any unpleasantness.

Is your space dog ready?

Take a look around your apartment and see if there is space for everything that you are going to need. If you do not have a balcony you are definitely going to need a separate toilet area – during the potty training stage at least- as well as somewhere for your pup to eat. Think about the practical repercussions of having a dog around you in the apartment – is it going to work? Be honest with yourself, because you can end up miserable with a sad dog if you get things wrong.

1. Exercise those paws! A dog needs to get out and stretch all four legs on a daily basis. Combine this with a diet that will keep your pup lean and healthy – as cute as overweight dogs can be, this is not fair or healthy. Plus, you could benefit from the exercise yourself.
2. Potty training is paramount. Train your dog so that your small space is clean at all times – this is also useful for keeping your neighbours happy, and your family healthy.
3. Grooming should be a daily event. Dogs shed their hair constantly and this is unsightly and potentially harmful.  So do you and your dog a favour and groom them as often as their breed requires.
4. Keep the toys handy. Your dog will need loads of stimulation to stay happy, particularly in a small space. Toys are a great way to keep pups happy when you aren’t there to do it for them.
5. Food and water are your first priority. Make sure your pet has ample amounts of each every day.
