The good news is that scientists have developed a canine hearing aid , which they hope to be available commercially at the end of 2009.  The new hearing aid will join a range of products already available for geriatric dogs.  If you have an elderly dog,  here are some products you might want to check out:

Dog diapers
Incontinence is one of the most unfortunate side effects of getting older, and it can be particularly distressing for dogs who have been told from a young age that, on no uncertain terms, 'going' in the house means 'bad dog.'   Dog diapers work much the same way as diapers for babies or incontinent adults, saving the mess around your home.  You can even buy cute panties to cover the diapers if your dog is concerned about how he looks!

If you have a larger dog, he may not be able to comfortably bend down to the floor to eat or drink as he ages.  If you see your dog struggling to reach his bowl, or lying down to eat or drink, then try placing his bowls at a more comfortable height .

Soft Bed
Elderly dogs with limited mobility or arthritis will appreciate a soft, foam mattress, raised about a foot off of floor level so that they can easily get in and out.   You might also want to consider an orthopedic bed for dogs who are really suffering from joint pain.

Clothes
Not just for preppy lap dogs, sweaters, hats and scarves can help to keep an elderly dog warm.  Dog bootees with rubber soles can also help dogs find more traction while walking and help to prevent falls.

Don't expect your elderly dog to be able to jump into your car, or climb the stairs like he once could.  However just because your dog is struggling to get places, doesn't mean that he doesn't still want to get there!  Help him out by using ramps or extra steps.

Dental Kit
As your dog ages, his teeth and gums are more susceptible to infection.  Check your dog's mouth regularly, and use a cleaning kit or dog mouthwash to keep bacteria at bay.  You may also want to consider a softer food, designed for older dogs.

Support Harness
If your older dog is really struggling to get around,  a support harness will let you give him a lift whenever he needs it.

Gone are the days when an older dog had to suffer for his last few years, before being put to sleep by the vet.  Now there are many ways which you can help a dog overcome any infirmities caused by age, and help him to live a higher quality, longer life.
